Experience a song and swipe through the years to enjoy multiple performances in one playback
2017 saw Mr.Children and Docomo celebrate their 25th anniversaries. This app brings them both together in an innovative commercial partnership. Fans can enjoy Mr.Children’s hit song “Tomorrow Never Knows” performed live over two decades. The difference here is that they scroll between concerts as the song plays, enjoying multiple performances through the years. Simply swipe up or down as the song plays to switch seamlessly between shows. This completely new way to experience music was No.1 on the AppStore in the entertainment category.
複数の動画を同時に並べて再生し、スワイプ操作でシークしながらシームレスに動画を切り替えていくため、異なるハードウェアスペックのデバイスへの対応に工夫が必要でした。
理想とする体験の実現のため、様々な動画形式を試したり、動画をテクスチャとして扱う方法を取り入れるなどしました。また、動画が切り替わる際のギャップを最小限に抑え、BPMの異なる演奏を任意のタイミングで切り替えても違和感なく滑らかに繋がるように、何度も地道な精度アップの調整を繰り返しました。このようなトライ&エラーを積み重ねた結果、気持ちよい体験をご提供できるアプリに仕上げることができました。
This app presented several big challenges: how to simultaneously play five videos with slightly different BPMs; make seamless switching from one to another possible at any point; and ensure high resolution playback across a large range of devices. After analyzing various video formats and playback techniques, as well as considering the ages of the selected devices we needed to accommodate, we chose to create the app to use downloaded content. We also took the time to manually add time codes to account for the slight differences between performances. Although the app was large, we were able to reduce the file size and still have seamless HD playback and switching, even for devices up to 2 years old.
